Week 4 Term 1 2014

Dear Families,

We are pretty sure all your children would have had a very early night tonight!!!!  We hope you have had some great feedback from your child about their day.  Lots of thinking and learning about floating and sinking and of course the boat ride on the Ted Ashby was a real highlight.  They all seemed pretty intrigued by the fish market too.  The day was just not long enough so we would really encourage you to take your child back to the Maritime Museum for another look.  It is FREE and I think they would love to show you around!!  We have attached a small sample of photos.  Tomorrow we will share an album with you so that you can download the photos you like.  An huge thank you to our wonderful helpers- Chantelle (James' Mum), Clint (Luke's Dad), Rachel (Jade's Mum) and Trish (Deacon's Nan).  You helped make the day go without a hitch and we really hope you enjoyed yourselves.

Our Trip To The Maritime Museum and Fish Market

Week 4 Term 1 2014

Hi Everyone,

As you know tomorrow we are off on our trip to the Maritime Museum and Auckland Fish Market.  The children are all very excited and we are looking forward to a great day of learning.  Our planned activities are a session at the museum investigating Floating and Sinking, a boat ride on the Ted Ashby, an opportunity to explore the exhibitions at the museum and finally a stroll through the fish market to have a look at the range of sea life on offer!  Please make sure your children come to school prepared tomorrow with comfortable clothing/shoes and enough food and water to sustain them through a busy day!! Thanks to those of you that have offered to come with us for the day giving us a ratio of 1:3.  Keep your eye on the blog as we will post photos soon.  If you have not already returned your cyber safety form, please do so as soon as possible so we know which children we can and cannot post photos of on here.

Many thanks for your ongoing support.

Week 3 Term 1 2014

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Learning Common 1’s blog for 2014!!  We will update this blog regularly so that you can see all the exciting things that are happening in our common.  The blog will be used alongside our Reflection Wall, Reflection Book, emails and newsletters, to keep you well informed and up to date.  It is also worth keeping an eye on Hobsonville Point School’s Facebook page as we may pop up on there from time to time too!

We hope you will agree that Term 1 has gotten off to a flying start!!  All the children have settled in very quickly and new routines have been established straight away so that the children become familiar with how we work in Learning Common One.

We started our reading programme last Monday.  Today you will find your child’s word ring and notebook in their reading folder. In the notebook there will be information on how our reading programme will run.  Please feel free to ask any questions.  Poetry folders also went home on Thursday.  Please ensure these are returned ready for a new poem the following Thursday.

Hopefully you saw our ‘Reflection’ wall, which has been set up outside the staffroom.  Keep an eye on the speech bubbles for reflections your child has made throughout the day.  The Reflection Book on the table will be updated every Friday and will give you a really good idea of the learning that has taken place throughout the week.

We would like to ask if you could bring in a framed photograph of your family for us to display.  These provide a great talking point for the children and help them to get to know each other.  Thank you to those families who brought in one last year.  If it is OK, we will keep them a little longer!

We will set up a ‘Recycled Materials’ area soon for you to bring in any materials from home.  From time to time we might ask for specific things to help us with our learning.

Please feel free to contact us at anytime via email:

or drop into the Common for a quick chat or to arrange a meeting.

If you can spare anytime to come in and help in Learning Common One, we would be most grateful.  This could be in the form of helping with admin type jobs, working with the children on their learning or sharing a particular skill or interest you have.

Thank you for your support.  We are looking forward to a year of fantastic learning.
