Our favourite things this week

This week we had a trip to the Screenies Festival. We got to go on a bendy bus! We watched 5 movies that were Margaret Mahy books.
The movies were:

Keeping House
The Great White Man Eating Shark
The Witch In The Cherry Tree
The Three Legged Cat
The Boy With Two Shadows

After we watched the movies we learnt how stories are made into movies. We talked about showing feelings and made some story boards of our own. We had to have the beginning, middle and end of the stories.

We ate our lunch at Western Springs Park, next to the zoo. We played on the playground. It was super cool and very fun. There were lots of things to play on. We saw chickens, swans, geese and baby chicks too. The chicks were so cute and they were fluffy.

Today we have been doing PINs (Passions, Interests, Needs workshops). Some of our workshops were gardening, making pizza, soccer, making tiger masks, making cards for the All Blacks, drawing baby dinosaurs, blogging (what we're doing right now!), learning Korean numbers, shoulder strength and fine motor skills, we also had a workshop where we learnt about how cow's milk is made.

"My favourite part of the trip was the theatre and the playing at the park. I liked seeing the river and I liked all the movies!" Nathan

"My favourite part of the week was seeing the movies and going to the playground. I liked the Keeping House movie the best." Suah

"I liked The Witch in the Cherry Tree movie the best. I went to my Mum's workshop today. We learnt about how cows make milk and we got to taste cheese, chocolate milk, custard and yoghurt. My Mum works at Fontera." Addison

"I liked the movies, my favourite was The Witch in the Cherry Tree. I liked gardening for PINs. I liked watering the strawberry plants." Olivia

"My favourite part of the week was watching the movies. I liked The Witch in the Cherry Tree and The Boy with Two Shadows the best." Kate

"I really liked riding on the bus. Today I did gardening and I liked planting the plants in the garden." Isla

"I liked going on the bus and watching The Great White Man Eating Shark. I liked playing on the playground." Ronald

"My highlight this week was doing gardening because it was fun watering the plants. I got to plant cauliflower and tomato plants." Tekoja

PINs Student Blog Post

Hello Everyone,

For our PINs workshop we chose blogging. We took photos of the PINs workshops and the new kindy that opened on Monday this week. We got to walk down to the Hobsonville Point Early Learning Centre to have a look. Lucia saw her mum and her brother! Olivia was hoping to see Alexia but she was having a sleep.

James ran a workshop to make a tiger mask. Ronald is helping Milla cut out her tier mask.

Theo ran a workshop to teach people how to draw a pelican.

Alfie ran a workshop about drawing Yoda.

Patience and Maia from LC4 ran a kapa haka workshop.

This is the blogging group standing outside the new kindergarten.
We look like the Kings of the Castle!

An awesome Thursday in LC1 (written by students)

Today in LC1 we've been singing, playing, doing drama and art, writing and some of us have been taking part in PINS workshops this afternoon.

There were three workshops we could choose from:
Sketching with Liz (they learnt how to draw minions)
Maths and Problem-Solving with Su-Min
Blogging with Ros

Our group chose blogging and we sat in the library (we call it The Portal) and we looked at our ECE portfolios. We thought about which was our favourite page and explained why. We saw all the things the learning stories had in common even though we came from different kindies and daycares. We saw that all the pages had:
  • pictures/art
  • photographs of us learning
  • writing
  • a title
  • the date
  • some had comments
All the stories about our learning were written by our teachers.
This blog about our learning in LC1 is normally written by our teachers.

Ros taught us how we could plan our own blog post and showed us a map of all the people across the world who read our blog. We didn't know that! So we want this post to be read by all our family and friends around the world and other people too.

Finally, we wrote this post and took photographs ourselves of all the things that are happening today in LC1!

Here are the photos we took, using Ros' phone:

Week7, Term 3

Hello Everyone!

It has been a wonderful week in LC1.  Today we have launched PINs (Passions, Interests and Needs).  We have had some amazing parents, LC4 students and even some of our LC1 students leading workshops.  The engagement was so high and it was great to see the children interacting with parents and other students in a variety of ways.  A huge thanks to Emma and Elizabeth for spending time with us today!!

PINS

This week we had:

*Baking
*Lego
*Minecraft
*Making skeletons
*Drawing Elsa
*Drawing dinosaurs
*Drawing and learning about the intestines

We are really looking forward to having more parents and children involved over the coming weeks and next term.  Please get in touch if you feel you have anything to offer!

The Babies Group

Following on from our amazing visit from Madeleine's lamb last week we have been learning about a variety of baby animals this week.  The girls have been learning the names of the animals and have worked on creating their own fact book to give others information.

The Bodies Group

Nathan inspired our workshops this week as he wanted to find out more about germs. First of all we learnt about what a germ is.  Then we learnt just how fast germs can spread with the glitter experiment!  In just a few moments the germs (glitter) had spread to everyone of us! Then we learnt about what happens in our bodies when germs enter.  The main ones that can make us sick are 'Bacteria' and 'Viruses'. It is important that we wash our hands with soap as this can stop the spread of them.

The NZ Bird Group

This week the group have continued with their focus on the Moa bird and learnt about who first found the bones of a Moa.  We also learnt about whereabouts Moa birds used to live in NZ.

The Bird Group (Asher, Ashley and Oscar)

This week they have looked at the Rainbow Lorikeet.  Please check your child's project folders for more information on where they are up to with their projects :)

NZ People, Places and Buildings

This week the group have focussed on how clothing has changed.  We are all looking forward to our trip to the Museum next week. If you get the chance to come and see our Wharenui in the project room please do! We have worked very hard on it and have even painted some carving designs on it too.

Our Shape Inquiry

We have continued our shape inquiry this week and began with the statement 'I think all shapes are flat'.  The children investigated and were agreeing or disagreeing with the statement.  We then set up exploration stations for them to play with the shapes and find out more.  Some children began to record their findings.  Watch this space for more research on 3D shapes next week!

Over and Out!
